A Portable data collector is essentially a  wireless barcode reader.  Not un-like a flatbed scanner (supermarket checkout), it translates optical impulses into electral ones.  The wireless barcode scanner is designed to allow the user to scan barcodes at a greater and greater distance from the PC, bringing the scanner to the inventory as apposed to the other way around.
